2023 Square and Circle Club Scholarship Recipients

Linen Feng: Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Scholarship

Linen Feng received this year’s Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Scholarship administered by TACT (The Association of Chinese Teachers). She graduated from Lowell High School and will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a major in Business Administration, Economics. Linen held two positions in Youth for SRO (YSRO). As secretary, she managed the team’s events budget and oversaw several creative projects with seniors, such as sachet making and photo book making. As vice president, she facilitated general meetings, communicated with team members, and created activity ideas. She served as a youth volunteer at all events. Linen also acted as Junior Coordinator of Heart in Motion and promoted volunteerism and youth leadership development. Craig Jang represented the Jang Family and S&C at TACT’s May 12 Scholarship Dinner.

Lisha Yu: Square and Circle Club Nursing Scholarship

Lisha Yu received this year’s Square and Circle Club Nursing Scholarship administered by TACT. She graduated from Lowell High School and will attend the University of San Francisco, entering their School of Nursing and Health Professions. Lisha was a peer mentor for the SF Parks and Recreation Department and an English/Reading Comprehension Tutor for the Chinese Cultural Services Center. As a Chemistry and Math Tutor for STAR Learning, Lisha worked with Chinese American children and provided specialized tutoring services in Chemistry Honors and NGSS Geometry. Lisha taught a fourth-grade math class, engaging students through participation and supplementary material. She was active as a Dragon Boat leader and member. Craig Jang represented the Jang Family and S&C at TACT’s May 12 Scholarship Dinner.

Heizel Ka Hei Chan: Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Grand Scholarship

Heizel Ka Hei Chan received this year’s Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Grand Scholarship administered by Asian Coalition at City College of San Francisco. She will attend the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Economics. Heizel works hard to balance her academic life, a part-time job, and family responsibilities. Even with her limited time, she has been involved in various school clubs, such as Alpha Beta Gamma and the Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association. She has volunteered at SF General Hospital to learn more about the medical field. Heizel aspires to apply to medical school and become a doctor. Olivia Aquino: Square and Circle Club/Yeong Jang Family Graduate Studies Scholarship

Olivia Aquino received this year’s Square and Circle Club/Yeong Jang Family Graduate Studies Scholarship administered by the Asian American Studies (AAS) at San Francisco State University. Graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian American Studies, she has been accepted into the MSW Program, School of Social Work at San Jose State University. During the 2020 COVID pandemic, Olivia joined the Auntie Sewing Squad to make face masks for migrant farm workers, MUNI bus drivers, San Quentin inmates, and First Nations. Olivia not only gained sewing skills, but also conducted oral histories of other sewists. Her essay, which preserves stories of the sewists, was published in the book, The Auntie Sewing Squad Guide to Mask Making, Radical Care, and Racial Justice (UC Press). Crystal Jang and Sydney Yeong represented themselves and S&C at the AAS Graduation Celebration on May 28.


2022 Square And Circle Club Scholarship Recipients

Jasmine Bao

Jasmine Bao received the 2022 Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Scholarship that was administered by TACT (The Association of Chinese Teachers). She graduated from Lowell High School and held positions in various community service organizations. In Fall 2022, she will be attending University of California, Berkeley with a major in Business. In addition to her studies and extracurricular activities, Jasmine has supported her family, particularly her mom, throughout her life. Her community service background has sparked her interest in the connection between cultural literacy and how businesses can invest in their communities.

HO Gia Linh

Gia Linh Ho received the 2022 Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Grand Scholarship that was administered by Asian Coalition. She transferred from City College of San Francisco to San Francisco State University in Fall 2022 and is majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Gia is an immigrant from Vietnam and a first-generation college student. She is an energetic individual who can balance work, study, and volunteer positions at college and community organizations.

PASCUAL Caleb

Caleb Pascual received the 2022 Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Graduate Studies Scholarship that was administered by the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University. He graduated from San Francisco State University with a double major in Asian American Studies and the Chinese Language Flagship, plus a minor in Cinema. He is a second-generation Filipino American and strives to become an educator of Asian American Studies. Caleb was accepted to the Fall 2022 MA Program in Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University.
