2024 SQUARE AND CIRCLE CLUB SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Derrick Yong S&C Scholarship Recipient

Derrick Yong received the Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang and Yeong Jang Family Scholarship administered by Asian Coalition at City College of San Francisco (CCSF). He will transfer to the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Computer Science. Derrick served in the Marine Corps before enrolling at CCSF. As a student, he maintained a 4.0 GPA as a teacher’s assistant in the Computer Science Department while working in the Financial Aid office and the Veterans Resource Center. Derrick’s career goal is to return to the Marine Corps and fly F35B Lighting II fighter jets to gain the necessary flight hours for astronaut candidacy. Daphne Wan S&C Scholarship Recipient

Daphne Wan received the Square and Circle Club Centennial/Rosemary Chan Scholarship administered by The Association of Chinese Teachers (TACT). Daphne attended Balboa High School and has been accepted to the University of California, Irvine, majoring in Public Health. She plans to become a Registered Nurse with a Master’s in Nursing (MSN). Daphne’s Community Service experience includes being a Teen Ambassador with the Children’s Book Project, a student intern for the San Francisco Unified School District, and a volunteer for Unidos en Salud. She feels that her work experiences have helped her to develop a strong work ethic, practical skills, and real-world knowledge. Her school counselor writes, “Daphne’s desire to learn more about how food can affect the body is a testament to her dedication to spreading knowledge of the overall health benefits to others, including her family. Her self-discipline, compassion, and strong willpower make her an ideal candidate for a future in the medical field.”


Cammy Zou S&C 2024 Scholarship Recipient

Cammy Zou is this year’s scholarship recipient of the Square and Circle Club/Elaine Jang Scholarship administered by The Association of Chinese Teachers (TACT). Cammy graduated from Galileo Academy of Science and Technology and has been accepted to the University of California, San Diego, majoring in Nursing. Cammy’s career goal is to become a nurse/medical doctor. She was an intern with the Kaiser Permanente LAUNCH Program, where she worked with Ambulatory Surgery Unit nurses and patient care techs. She was a youth leader on the 826 Youth Leadership Advisory Board and mentored young children weekly. As a Youth Health Equity Council’s Junior Coordinator with the American Heart Association, Cammy helped plan meetings and volunteer  events. She also assisted with advocacy work related to public health policies.


Katie Tan S&C 2024 Scholarship Recipient

Katie Tan received the Square and Circle Club Nursing Scholarship administered by The Association of Chinese Teachers (TACT). She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and has been accepted to the University of San Francisco where she will major in Nursing. Katie’s community service includes being a Wellness Screening Volunteer and Focus Group Co-leader at the Chinese Community Health Resource Center. She was also a media outreach intern with the Youth Movement of Justice and Organizing. In the past few years, Katie worked as a pediatric clinic assistant in the office of Dr. Su Mui Ku. According to her physics teacher, Katie offers “kindness to her classmates and . . . elevates the work of those around her.”
