Currently, the Square and Circle Club offers five scholarships for students from high school to graduate studies:
Square and Circle Club / Elaine Jang Scholarship ($2,000) – administered by The Association of Chinese Teachers (TACT)
This scholarship began in 2018 for a graduating senior who attends a San Francisco high school and is accepted to a college/university for the following fall semester. TACT is a not-for-profit organization founded in San Francisco in 1969, and has been involved in issues such as affirmative action, bilingual education, curriculum, and teachers’ working conditions. In 2018, they distributed 17 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. TACT’s scholarship application deadline is in the beginning of the spring semester. Square and Circle Club Scholarships – administered by the Asian Coalition at City College of San Francisco
In 1954, the Square and Circle Club established a San Francisco City College scholarship. In 1984, Asian Coalition at City College of San Francisco began administering the Square and Circle Club Scholarship when the Coalition established a more inclusive scholarship program for deserving Asian Pacific Islander American and immigrant students. International students are encouraged to apply as well. Selection criteria for all scholarships include financial need, academic progress, classroom participation, school/community service, potential leadership skills, and evaluations from instructors and/or counselors. Currently, the Club offers two scholarships to CCSF students:
- Square and Circle Club Nursing Scholarship ($1,000) – for a student in the nursing program
- Square and Circle Club Transfer Scholarship ($1,500) – for a graduating CCSF student transferring to a four-year college/university in the following Fall semester
In 2018, Asian Coalition distributed 23 scholarships to CCSF students. Asian Coalition’s scholarship application deadline is in the beginning of the spring semester. Go to CCSF Asian Coalition for more information.
Square and Circle Club Graduate Studies Scholarship ($1,500) – administered by Asian American Studies (AAS) Department at San Francisco State University
Square and Circle Club began offering scholarships to San Francisco State University students in the 1960s, most notably to Nursing majors. In 2007, this evolved into the Square and Circle Club Graduate Studies Scholarship that is given every year to a graduating AAS major at SF State University who is accepted to a teaching credential or an MA/PhD program for the following fall semester. The AAS Department’s scholarship application deadline is in late April. Email firstname.lastname@example.org in the beginning of spring semester for application information.
Square and Circle Club Fellowship (amount varies) – administered by Mills College in Oakland, California
Since 2000, this fellowship has been administered and distributed by Mills College from a Square and Circle Club endowment. It is for a Mills graduate student majoring in visual arts, music, dance, drama, or written literature with preference to a woman of Chinese heritage. The amount and frequency have varied over the years.
